(the) 1922 Committee
the 1922 Committee [the 1922 Committee] (also the Conservative and Unionist Members’ Committee)
(in Britain) the group of Conservative Members of Parliament that includes all the party’s ↑backbenchers. Its name comes from a meeting of Conservative MPs in the ↑Carlton Club, London, in October 1922, when the need for an organization through which backbenchers could have more influence was discussed. Members of the Committee now meet regularly and its opinions are passed on to the party leader.
